Appalachian State University softball embarked on its final Southern Conference tournament on Wednesday morning. App State fell to Chattanooga, 3-0.
The Mountaineers (19-31) found themselves in an early hole when the Mocs’ Sarah Beth Roberts took the first pitch of the game deep to right field and over the fence for a lead off home run.
The Mocs (31-19) would plate single runs in the fifth and sixth on RBI singles from Alyssa Taylor and Kaiti Dutton to add insurance to Katie Henderson’s dominate performance in the circle. Henderson recorded the first seven outs via the strikeout. For the game, Henderson would strikeout a tournament record 15 en route to a six-hit shutout performance.
Cynthia Gomez (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) led the Apps offensively finishing 3-for-3 at the plate – accounting for half of the Mountaineer hits in the game. Lindsay Loudermilk (Bluff City, Tenn./Sullivan East) added a 2-for-3 performance with Caroline Rogers (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) collecting one hit in a 1-for-3 day at the plate.
Sydney Laws (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) was solid against Chattanooga pitching 5.1 innings and scattering five hits while giving up three runs and striking out four. Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) relieved Laws and got the final two outs in the sixth.
Appalachian will play the loser of the No. 3 seeded Furman Paladins and No. 6 seeded Western Carolina Catamounts at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning.
