Lenoir-Rhyne University Head Volleyball Coach Dave Markland has announced the addition of five players for the 2014 season. The Bears signed Samantha Bishop, Erika Graybeal, Savannah Hicks, Ashley Markland and Kathryn Sizemore.
Bishop (Spring Hill, Fla.) played at Central High School where she earned all-county and honorable mention All-Suncoast Team accolades. In addition, Bishop was varsity captain for three years and was the team’s Offensive MVP in 2013.
Bishop’s club team, the No Name Volleyball Club, was ranked No. 15 in the state of Florida for 18U Open.
Graybeal (Valdese, N.C.) was four-year letterwinner and two-time team Most Valuable Player at Jimmy C. Draughn High School. Graybeal also plays for the BEVC Kryptonite 18U Club Team.
Hicks (Merritt Island, Fla.) is a transfer from Florida Atlantic University and played high school volleyball at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
During her prep career, Hicks was named the team Most Valuable Player in 2012 and Rookie of the Year in 2009. Her club team, Orlando Volleyball Academy 18 Molten, competed in the National All-Star Tournament.
Markland (Conover, N.C.) played at St. Stephens High School, where she earned First-Team All-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference honors twice and was the league defensive player of the year this past fall. Markland also led St. Stephens to the state semifinals in 2013 and the Indians finished 27-1 on the year.
Markland was also First-Team All-Platinum Region and was part of five Platinum Region Championships for the IC Stars Club Team.
Sizemore (Arden, N.C.) played at T.C. Roberson High School where she earned 2012 and 2013 All-MAC 4A and All-Western North Carolina honors. Sizemore was also part of two league championship teams (2012 and 2013) and served two years as team captain.
Her club team, Biltmore Volleyball Academy, won the Southern Classic Championship in 2012 and 2013 and the Junior Hi Neighbor Championship in 2013.
Lenoir-Rhyne opens the 2014 season on Friday, September 5, at the Queens Fall Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., against GRU Augusta (10:30 a.m.) and Armstrong Atlantic State (3:00 p.m.).
