No. 18 Lenoir-Rhyne (33-10, 11-5) and Catawba (23-14, 8-8) split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Whitley Field. The Bears lost the first contest, 1-0, but prevailed in the second game, 5-0.
Game One - Catawba 1, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
The Indians' Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning for the lone score of the game.
Catawba's Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C.) improved to 16-6 on the year after throwing a three-hit shutout. Tysinger allowed just three hits and three strikeouts in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.), the reigning SAC Pitcher Of The Week, fell to 16-6 on the year after suffering the loss.
Hoskins lost despite allowing just two hits and one unearned run to go along with 10 strikeouts.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Catawba 0
L-R rebounded by splitting the doubleheader with a victory in the nightcap highlighted by a four-run fifth inning which broke the contest open.
Hoskins (17-6) threw a five-hit shutout, her 10th of the season, while senior shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) drove in two runs and sophomore outfielder Lauren Elder (Taylorsville, N.C.) finished with two hits in the win.
Catawba's Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, N.C.) was tagged with the loss and fell to 3-3 on the year.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to host Mars Hill in a league doubleheader on Saturday as part of Senior Day beginning at 2pm.
